Some of my favourite art projects are those with ties to other subjects, such as science, language, history, and math. These classes allow for a creative entry-way into new learning experiences for students, while also demonstrating the overlap between different subjects in their school curriculum.

Recent STEAM and other interdisciplinary programming:

French Art Workshops - St. Mark Separate School - June 2021
A series of six virtual art workshops taught to grade 3-8 students, with ties to their French and Social Studies curriculum. Activities included: learning about Québec's Winter Carnaval while creating a paper-cut ceinture fléchée; discovering the histories of different francophone communities in Canada while creating a watercolour landscape representative of that province; and learning about the history of Paris and Notre Dame cathedral while creating a drawing of a gargoyle.
Art of Nature - Kingsway College School and Playocity - March-June 2021
A 12-week virtual enrichment program for students in JK through to grade 3, taught over Zoom. Children were guided to create drawing, painting, and mixed media projects inspired by science and nature. Themes covered included insect anatomy, minerals and crystals and animal habitats.

The Science of Art & The Art of Science - ExploreIt! - Jan-February 2021
A 4-week program featuring fun, hands-on activities that demonstrated how scientific principles inform the creation of art, and how art can help us understand the inner workings of the world around us. Scientific topics covered included acoustics, diffusion and solubility, anatomy and symmetry, and volcanoes!

Scientific Illustration - ExploreIt! - February-March 2021
In this program, students aged 8-12 with a passion for both drawing and science were introduced to the field of scientific illustration. We learned how scientific art helps us understand the world around us by creating rich and beautiful visual explanations of scientific theories, and created art based on paleontology, marine biology, and aerodynamics.
Colourful Chameleon - Outschool and Playocity - November 2020
A single workshop offered to children on Outschool, a virtual learning platform. In this bilingual lesson taught in both French and English, students were guided on how to create a drawing of a chameleon that doubled as a colour wheel. Vocabulary covered included shapes, colours, art materials, and more.
